Los Angeles, CA – In a major victory for fire survivors and vulnerable residents, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed an aggressive new price gouging ordinance to crack down on predatory pricing practices in the wake of Los Angeles’ devastating Palisades Fire.

The new city law strengthens existing price gouging protections, expands coverage to include housing and lodging, and increases penalties up to $30,000 per violation.

“This is about fairness. This is about standing up for people who have already lost everything,” said Councilwoman Traci Park. “We will not allow profiteers to take advantage of displaced families, seniors, and small business owners during their time of greatest need.”

KEY PROTECTIONS UNDER THE ORDINANCE:

  • Housing & Lodging Included – Extends anti-price gouging laws to rentals, hotels, and temporary housing, preventing landlords and businesses from exploiting disaster victims.
  • Strengthens Fines for Violators – private right action resulting in penalties of up to $30,000
  • Stronger Public Awareness & Enforcement – Expands outreach efforts so residents know their rights and how to report price gouging.
  • Faster Response to Violations – Enhances coordination between city agencies to rapidly investigate and prosecute offenders.

“When disaster strikes, Angelenos step up for each other,” stated Councilmember Park. “This ordinance ensures that our city protects our most vulnerable.”

To report instances of price gouging, the City is launching a new, simple price gouging complaint form or they can call 3-1-1 to report illegally hiked rents and prices.
