Los Angeles, CA - Today, Councilwoman Traci Park of the 11th District introduced a pivotal motion during the Los Angeles City Council meeting, aiming to significantly enhance security and safety measures across public libraries within the city. This motion is part of her broader public safety strategy, dubbed “A Safer 11 for a Better 11,” focused on increasing safety and well-being within her district.

“Our public libraries are more than just buildings with books; they are sanctuaries of learning and safety for the community,” said Councilwoman Park. “It's imperative that we take decisive action to uphold these principles and ensure that our libraries remain welcoming and secure spaces for everyone.”

Los Angeles' public libraries serve as vital community hubs, providing residents with access to essential information, resources, and learning opportunities. However, recent reports and testimonials from library staff highlight an urgent need for improved security measures to protect both employees and patrons from increasing incidents of verbal abuse, violence, and harassment.

The motion proposes a collaborative approach involving the Los Angeles Police Department's Security Services Division and Library Department to promptly develop and implement enhanced safety protocols, including workplace violence prevention plans and training as mandated by California Senate Bill 533 (SB533). Additionally, it calls for strategic capital improvements, stricter enforcement of library suspensions, and swifter response times from law enforcement to service calls.

Furthermore, Councilwoman Park's motion requests comprehensive reports on the nature and frequency of incidents at library branches from 2017 to 2024, detailing the allocation of security resources, and the deployment of mental health service providers, providing a clear picture of the current challenges and areas needing immediate attention.

The “Safer 11” public safety initiative reflects Councilwoman Park’s commitment to proactive leadership in addressing the public safety needs of the 11th District and her dedication to ensuring that all community spaces across the city are safe, inclusive, and equipped to serve the public effectively.
