The comprehensive initiative, titled “A Safer 11 for a Better 11,” prioritizes strategic investments in public safety to address crime, enhance infrastructure, and create safer, brighter neighborhoods for all residents. Park will introduce motions tomorrow during the LA City Council meeting to secure the funding for various initiatives.
"Crime and fear have no place in our communities," said Councilmember Traci Park. "This public safety package is about taking bold, innovative action to protect our neighborhoods and ensure that every resident feels safe and secure. Our objective is straightforward – to reclaim our neighborhoods by delivering the safety our constituents deserve."
The package includes a wide range of initiatives designed to address pressing challenges in CD11:
Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs): 100 ALPRs will be installed across the district, empowering LAPD to deter and respond to crime in real time while tackling issues like reckless street racing and intersection takeovers.
LAPD Overtime Funding: $200,000 in discretionary funds will support overtime for additional patrols, particularly around interim homeless housing sites, ensuring targeted and timely responses to crime.
Tree Trimming Services: An additional $100,000 will be allocated to improve lighting and visibility on district streets, making neighborhoods safer and more welcoming.
Library Safety Measures: A motion will be introduced to reassess and strengthen security at CD11 libraries, protecting librarians, families, and patrons from unacceptable safety challenges.
Venice Beach Park Rangers: Starting in January, Venice Beach will receive dedicated weekly park ranger patrols to enhance safety at the city’s most visited public park space.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing public safety challenges. “This is totally a comprehensive public safety package bringing all the stakeholders together to address the issues of the day,” stated Chief McDonnell. “We’re proud to collaborate with Councilmember Park today and with other leaders on solutions that make a real difference in people’s everyday lives. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the community and city leaders to build a safer Los Angeles.”
Newly elected District Attorney Nathan Hochman reinforced his commitment to a unified focus on justice and public safety. “The theme today is standing together. Too often we’ve had divisions among law enforcement, among the community, among the district attorney’s office, and when we are divided we are not effective,” said District Attorney Hochman. “Councilmember Park has brought us together today to send an unmistakably clear message to a group that’s not here today that needs to hear this message – the criminals. For far too long they believed that they could act with impunity. That stops today.”
Councilmember Park highlighted the significance of working together to address crime, acknowledging that by working with Chief McDonnell and DA Hochman, our leading law enforcement officials, she is sending a clear message that crimes will no longer go unchecked in CD11. This package represents a collective commitment to delivering the safety and security our residents deserve.
Today’s announcement underscores Councilmember Park’s vision for a safer, stronger district. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, strategic investments, and strengthened partnerships, the public safety package positions CD11 as a leader in crime-preventative innovation.
"Safety is the foundation of everything we do. A Safer 11 is the cornerstone of a Better 11, and today’s initiatives mark a transformative step forward for our community," Councilmember Park concluded.
