LOS ANGELES – Fire hydrants are a critical part of Los Angeles’ emergency response infrastructure, ensuring firefighters have immediate access to water when disaster strikes. To strengthen public safety and emergency preparedness, Councilmember Traci Park (CD11) introduced a motion today directing a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of the entire city’s fire hydrant system.

The measure calls on the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) and Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) to assess the current condition of hydrants citywide, identify maintenance and repair needs, and propose solutions to address issues such as hydrant theft and vandalism.

“Ensuring that every fire hydrant in Los Angeles is fully operational is more than a matter of public safety – it can be a matter of life and death.” said Councilmember Traci Park. “Our first responders need reliable infrastructure to do their jobs effectively, and this motion is about getting a full picture of our city’s fire hydrant system so that we can take action where it’s needed most.”

Los Angeles’ fire hydrants are inspected and maintained regularly, but aging infrastructure, theft, and damage can impact their functionality. Councilmember John Lee (CD12), Chair of the Public Safety Committee, emphasized the importance of this review, stating: “Firefighters rely on a fully functioning water supply to protect lives and property. This motion is an important step toward ensuring that every neighborhood has the infrastructure in place to support emergency response and protect life and property.”

The motion directs LAFD and LADWP to report back on the status of hydrants across the city, current maintenance protocols, and recommendations for strengthening hydrant reliability and security. The findings will help inform next steps, including potential funding for repairs and policy improvements to enhance emergency response capabilities.

The latest motion underscores Councilmember Park’s laser-focused commitment to tackling what she has described as decades-long underinvestment in our LAFD and the resources they rely on to keep the public safe.
